Fruiting Body: cap 2-7 (9) cm; stalk (2) 6-11 (18) cm long x 5-10 (15) mm diameter, equal. Spore Print Color: white. Spores: basidiospores (8) 9-12 (14) x (5) 5.5-6.5 (7.5) µm, ellipsoid, smooth, hyaline, inamyloid.

Diagnostic macroscopic feature: the red to orange cap, white to yellowish (not red) gills and bruising reaction of entire mushroom to black distinguishes this species

Diagnostic microscopic feature: no sterile cells on gills or stalk; cuticle of gelatinous hyphae, pileus with lactifers, clamp connections present in cap
