Fruiting Body: apothecium 2-6 cm; stalk short and thick or nearly absent. Spores: ascospores 26-40 x 10-12 µm, ellipsoid, 2 oil drops, enveloped in mucilaginous sheath.

Diagnostic macroscopic feature: large cups with red interiors and white exteriors, on partially-buried basswood sticks, often under fallen leaves, in late fall or early spring
